Nasira hadn’t complained about their last date, but her body language said everything. The line that appeared between her brows at various times during their evening out told the story of her annoyance.

He also saw it in the choice to look away after she said hello to the people who stopped to chat, distancing herself from her surroundings.

Rory had hoped this time would be different. Taking her to this restaurant in the hills overlooking Kingston meant they wouldn’t have people interrupting them all night. So far, things had worked out fine.

They’d eaten their seafood dinner under the stars, undisturbed. But that was expected in a setting as exclusive as this hoity-toity restaurant that only the rich could afford. Now, they stood side by side watching the lights of Kingston city twinkling below.

Nasira turned from the balcony and looked up at him. In a sleeveless black dress, trimmed with gold, and standing close to his height in wedge heels, she reminded him of a queen.

He glanced at the chair where her purse and shawl rested. “Aren’t you cold?”

“Not really, but the air does have a little bite.” The chirping of crickets and soft background music broke the silence. After a moment, she asked, “Are you sure we have to go to that show?”

He shrugged. “We don’t, if you don’t want to.”

“I’d feel guilty if you spent good money on those tickets and we didn’t attend.”

“So why ask?”

“Because I like it here.” She gazed around and filled her chest with air. “Very much.”

Rory rested a hand on her shoulder. “I like it, too. It’s peaceful.”

Aside from them, only a few other couples were scattered across the marble-tiled patio on the roof of the building.

Tipping her head up, she asked, “Why don’t you live in the hills?”

He reeled her in with one arm around her neck and kissed her cheek. “Because I’m comfortable with where I live now.”

Smirking, she said, “I thought one of the first things a deejay does when he makes money is to buy a house uptown?”

“Well, this one is different.”

Nasira glanced toward where the nearest couple sat, then lifted her chin and spoke next to his skin. “That’s true. You continue to surprise me all the time.”

He kept his voice pitched low. “So you keep telling me.”

“There’s something so different about you in comparison to all the other entertainers I’ve been around.”

He kept his focus on her because he didn’t want to miss anything she said. “You sound like you’ve met more than your fair share.”

“I told you who I used to work for, didn’t I?”

He let his hand slide down to grip hers. “It’s not all bad. Trust me.”

“Hmmm.”

Rory cupped her face and kissed her nose. His lips settled into a rueful smile. “Nasira Sawyers, you’re judgmental as hell.”

“I am not,” she said, then burst out laughing.

“What’s so funny?”

“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you’ve been talking to Zorra. She said the same thing today.”

Leaning against the railing, he laughed. “Smart girl. She knows her mother.”

“The two of you have it all wrong.
